Before you let the Sunday evening dread take over, take 20 minutes with your journal.
A little planning now can make the week ahead feel far more manageable. Sunday evenings can often feel like the end of the weekend and the beginning of the Monday rush. But spending just a little time planning ahead can turn that feeling of chaos into a sense of calm.
A Sunday night planning session doesn't need to take hours. Your journal or planner can help you get everything out of your head and onto the page, so you're not lying in bed mentally running through everything you need to remember.
1. Look at the Week Ahead
Start by checking your calendar. Write down important work meetings, school events, appointments, deadlines and activities. Seeing the whole week in one place makes it easier to spot busy days and prepare in advance.
2. Plan for School
If you have children, check for PE days, homework, after-school clubs, trips and anything that needs to be taken into school. A quick check on Sunday can prevent the Monday morning scramble.
3. Make Your Weekly To-Do List
Write down everything you need to do during the week, from replying to an important email to buying birthday cards or booking an appointment. You don't need to do everything on Monday; simply getting it written down helps clear your mind.
4. Think About Meals
A rough meal plan can make busy evenings much easier. Check what you already have, make a shopping list and think about the nights when you'll need something quick and simple.
5. Leave Space for Yourself
Finally, don't fill every available space. Add something to the week that you enjoy, whether that's a walk, coffee with a friend, reading your book or simply an early night.
Your Sunday night planning routine doesn't have to be perfect. The aim isn't to control every minute of the week, but to begin Monday feeling prepared, organised and a little more in control. Sometimes, 20 minutes with a journal on a Sunday evening is all it takes to make the week ahead feel much more manageable.
